Lesson 6
IT Enters a New Learning Environment

The four conceptual models namely Meaning Learning, Discovery Learning, Generative Learning and constructivism are useful in achieving instructional goals through preferred application of educational technology. With these conceptual models, we shall see how effective teacher’s best interact with their students in innovative learning activities while integrating technology to the teaching-learning process. Meaningful learning this gives focus to new experience that is related to what the learner already knows. A new experience departs from the learning of a sequence of words or memorization through rote memory but gives attention to meaning. Discovery learning this kind of learning is differentiated from reception learning in which ideas are presented directly to students in a well-organized way, such as through a detailed set of instructions to complete an experiment or task. Generative Learning In generative learning we have active learners who attend to learning events and generate drawing from this experience and draw inferences thereby creating a personal model or explanation to the new experience in the context of existing knowledge. Constructivism the learner builds a personal understanding through appropriate learning activities and a good learning environment. The most accepted principles of constructivism are: learning consists in what a person can actively assemble for himself and not what he can receive passively. The role of learning is to help the individual live/adapt to his personal world.
DISCUSSION

1.      Do the new learning theories mean we should stop memorization and drill activities in class? Why?

Ø  For me, No, because we have also to consider the basic learning. Memorization and drill activities are also part of our learning as an individual since we were young. Actually, it does not mean that we should stop memorizing or having drill activities, it is for us to discover things, enhance our understanding and to widen our knowledge with the use of the new learning.

2.      There are official truths/principles in such discipline as Ethics, Chemistry, Physics, History, etc. Do you think constructivism really want to abandon universal truths/principles? (clue: some beliefs result from faulty information, ancient/unscientific traditions. Primitive people believed the world was flat. Can you cite other untruthful beliefs?

¨      Constructivism does not want to abandon universal truth but it was created to help for the development of our nation. It helps to renew what ineffective in order to be more effective.
3.      Can personal discoveries contradict socially/culturally accepted principles or values? (Clue: revolutions are caused by those in power like despots unwilling to change their ways. What did Jose Rizal and other patriots discover about colonization of the Philippine islands)?

Ø  Yes, because any personal ideas or discoveries as well is a product of constructivism and it may affect the beliefs of people towards their past beliefs.

State-of-the-Art ET Application Practices

More recent ET in education practice

Present day students have become computer literate.

Teachers have emphasized rote learning; they spent more time in methods.

Shifting from traditional learning to creative and critical thinking skills

Constructivism paved the way for instructional approaches, students’ rely less on teachers as information-givers. The acquire information build their own

DISCUSSION
1.      What do you say to educators who say technology in teaching takes time and expensive?
Ø  It doesn't take as long as you think it might take. There will always be new technology for people to learn with. Technology (in my opinion) should make teaching easier and maybe a bit more exciting for everyone to learn about stuff they never learned before. It’s also easier to change some of the information that lets say a textbook or an encyclopedia has to offer. Technology is what makes us understand things a little easier for people to learn stuff. Yeah it is expensive but sometimes technology contains more information than the average textbook or encyclopedia.
2.      What can you say about teachers who use media simply to make classes entertaining and fun?
Ø  On my own opinion, it could be that teachers use media to entertain but not all the time. And in that case, there should be something from that media which students can get and learn. Not just purely for entertaining, it should be related to the topic you will be presented. The key word in the question is "simply." If the only purpose is to make it fun, then it is not appropriate. A teacher should always begin with an objective--what do I want my students to understand or be able to do after this lesson. Once that is decided, then there are a variety of ways to teach that lesson. Choosing a fun way is a great idea--as long as it is both fun and effective. In other words, media has its place, but the learning still has to happen.
3.      Comment on the opinion that ET-supported instruction is difficult to assess?
Ø  Instruction supported by educational technology can be hard to assess, depending on how heavily a student or teacher relies on the technology. It is easy for both parties to become dependent on technology, which can make it hard to assess the effectiveness of the tool when the child is taken out of the classroom.

4.      ET-supported instruction is difficult to assess?   It is not difficult to assess for me, because as teachers we studied on how to assess the performance of the students and we use some guidelines and rubrics in assessing our students and with the use of technology, it’s up to the teacher on how he/ she gives a task or assessment to the students where everyone uses technology.

5.      What could future learners have as an advantage over present-day learners?

Ø  They are more equipped with the advanced technologies that we are using. Future learners will have another type of technologies which are easier to use and is helpful in Education. They can also have more learning on these technologies than the present learners.

Basic Concepts on integrating Technology in Instruction
It has been a long time issue as to how to integrate technology in the teaching-learning process. The mere use of computer does not mean that technology is already integrated in the instruction. A need to provide learning on how educational technology can be applied and integrated in the teaching-learning process is very crucial. According to Pisapia (1994) in her definition of integrating technology with teaching is that there is integration if the learning technologies are used to introduce, reinforce, supplement, and extend skills.
There is no INTEGRATIVE PROCESS if for example; the teacher makes students play computer games to give them a rest period during classes.

DISCUSSION

1.      What are your ideas about students spending off school time playing computer games in computer café/rooms?

Ø  As I know, Internet, games and social networking is the one that make the students go at the computer cafes and because they are lots of computer cafes now, they can subscribe at the internet and even near school they are computer cafes. I think the students are cutting their classes during their class, and because of the high-technology that we encountered today, the young one are already know how to deal or play with the computer. The computer cafes also considered the students especially the elementary students to play at the computer shops while the school hours are ongoing, and because all children are spending their time playing, even the games at the computer they spending all they time. And because of it they will get failing grades and eye problem because of the radiation.

2.      What do you say to the plan of the Department of Education to supply one computer unit to each public school (average school population is 1,000 students) in the country?

Ø  As, I can say that it is not enough for the students most especially when their population are very big. The tendency of this plan is that there are students who cannot use the computer and it is very limited to fewer students only. Even though they will have a schedule for each student in using the computer it is still not adequate to acquire enough knowledge needed for the students. They can’t benefit well in this plan. It’s a sad thing that only 1 computer would be given to a public school which has an average population of 1,000 in each school. We all know that computer is important in teaching and learning process especially that most of the teachers nowadays are giving an assignment which uses computer. And this computer is one of our source of information both the teachers and the learners.

3.      What do you think is really the wisdom of introducing expensive technology in schools of third world (peasant) country?
Ø  The wisdom of introducing expensive technology in schools of Third World peasant countries is that students will acquire more knowledge through the use of this technology. And in introducing the expensive technology in schools, the students will also gain new information about their lessons. It will also make their learning
faster and easier. But let's also consider the parents of these
students, I can also say that in introducing the expensive technology the financial problem will also arouse. If they can't buy their daily needs now, how much more if it's the expensive technology? So, through this students can benefit but there are some areas that will be affected.
4.      While Educational Technology 2 is not about teaching computer skills, do you believe adequate hands-on computer skills are necessary to put technology integration into practice? Give reason for your answer.
Yes, I do believe about it. Adequate hands-on computer skills are necessary because it can put your knowledge into practice. If you don't practice your knowledge it will be useless. We must know about
the basic computer skills first to know better and it can easily understand when it goes to hand-on.

DISCUSSION

1.      How do Philippine schools compare with schools in progressive countries in the Asia Pacific region?

Ø  The schools in the Philippines are still developing but it isn't not progressing much due to the lack of support and funding of government to education. Other Asia Pacific regions are more progressive due to support of the government for the progression of their education…

2.      The plan of the department of education is to supply computers to public elementary and high schools at a ratio of 1 schools-1 computer. How adequate or inadequate do you find this plan considering that the public school system in the Philippines has an average of 1,000 students in each school?

Ø  The DEPED’s plan is really inadequate because 1,000 students cannot learn by just using one computer. It a lot more effective if the school and government provide enough computers in the school so learners can practice on how can they the computer properly.
3.      What can be the proposed so that the Philippines can cope up with its neighbors on IT education?

Ø  So that our country Philippines can cope up with its neighbors on IT education, it is better to have more advanced technologies. It is better to educate students starting from elementary on the computers we are using so that they may be able to use it in the future since we are in a modern generation. The Government should support and gives funds in the progression of education. Many countries are progressing due to the development of their education. If the government does this, we could easily cope up with our neighboring countries.

4.      Filipinos, including students, are hooked up on cell phone texting. Is this enough for information skills literacy for our citizens and youths? Mention the benefits and disadvantages of our texting culture.

  • Text Messaging is silent communication between two individuals. You can send text messages to each other without other people being able to hear what is being said. Text messaging has its advantages than over making a regular phone call on your cell phone. They enable you the privacy to exchange messages with each other without fear of other people knowing what you and another individual are talking about. You can also send pictures in text messages instantly. But there are a lot of disadvantages of texting. Texting can be addictive, some student instead of studying, they’re more focus on texting. Another disadvantage is being illiterate, if a person is used to texting by the use of jejemon, he / she be used on writing on a wrong grammar.
